Pay at the Pump and Prevent impulse Purchases

You tube:

Today, we are going to discuss paying at the pump and preventing impulse purchasing.

This is not a topic many people think about. So, I immediately got excited about sharing this tip with you!

Have you ever noticed how many retail items there are to look at when you go inside a gas station to pay for your gasoline?

Chips.

Soda.

Chocolate donuts and peanut butter cookies trucked in by a local bakery.

Convenience-size packages of everything from aspirin to shampoo.

Things You Know but May Not Think About:

Number One:

Your impulse purchases produce profits for these retail outlets. After all, they are in business to make money. Keep in mind that convenience usually translates into an increase in product price because it is specially packaged for quick sale and consumption.

Whether you are following a budget, or you are determined to eliminate nagging debt, pay at the pump, and eliminate going into a retail convenience store where you may be tempted to buy something you do not need.

Profit yourself by doing some convenience repackaging of your own.

Break up larger packages of snacks into lunchbox size containers to carry with you in the car.

Include a bottled beverage of your choosing. Transport them in a small canvas cooler or inexpensive lunchbox, with a re-freezable block of ice.

Number two:

If you are determined to get debt out of your life, it can be wise to acknowledge your own spending habits in these environments. If you do this in a no-shame, no-blame manner, you are more likely to come up with a plan that works well for your own circumstances.

You may want to change the day or time of day that you gas up. Maybe you could fill up the gas tank after lunch or dinner.

If you must go inside after pumping gas, is your spouse better at ignoring the “temptation aisle”? If so, ask them to go inside.

Number three:

You may choose to distract yourself from convenience shopping while at the gas station.

Some people carry a small notebook for gas station stops in their vehicle glove box. Here are some reasons this is done:

Documenting gas fills.

Calculating gas mileage (this can also keep your mind sharp).

Write out your to-do list.

Artistic?

Doodle or sketch.

Inventive? Think or ponder.

These are only a few ways that you can keep yourself from in-store browsing that often turns into needless spending or temptation buying.

Try these tips or create your own ways of deflecting impulse purchasing when you fill up the gas tank.
