5 reasons you need a detailed budget for your business

While having an OK budget is better than not having one at all, there are a number of benefits you get from taking the time to create a detailed budget for your business.   Learn more in this week’s blog.

Entrepreneurial business owners are intuitive people. They know how to get their business going and serve their customers. But being good at business doesn’t automatically mean that you are good with finances. That is where a detailed budget comes in to play. Here are 5 reasons you need a detailed budget for your business.

1. Gives you realistic goals to reach

Entrepreneurial business owners often thrive on achieving goals. But just having a goal is not enough. You need to have a plan to achieve your goal. That is where a budget comes in. Your budget is your plan to achieve your financial goal and reach it!

If you can’t detail how to achieve your goals on your budget, you can’t achieve your goals very well. When you are creating your budget, you develop details specifically for your business allowing you to achieve your chosen goals. Now you know what you need to achieve your goal because you have worked the details out ahead of time.

2. Helps you control your spending

When you compare your detailed budget to your actual results, you can easily spot areas where you may be getting off track. As you review your finances each month, this comparison allows you to analyze those areas that are off budget. You can make needed changes to get your operation back in line as the year progresses. This monthly analysis allows you to adjust procedures before they become habitual and hard to break.

3. Helps you understand your finances

As an entrepreneur you do great things with your business.  That doesn’t necessarily mean that you understand the finances of your business. You need the finances to stay in business. Taking the time to create a detailed budget helps you understand the financial side of your business.

These same problem solving skills you use in your business help you dig into your finances. Learning the financial side of your business will take longer the first few times you do budget research. But just like your other business skills, the more you practice, the better you will get at doing it. Being in control of your finances is your bridge to financial success in your business.  Don't expect someone else to do this for you.

4. Helps you understand your cash flow

You need money to keep your business going. In order to consistently keep your cash flow consistently positive, you need to understand how the cash side of your business operates. Your budget is the key to understanding your cash and keeping it flowing in the right direction.

Preparing a detailed budget shows you how your cash is scheduled to move in your business. Knowing how the money is flowing allows you to make plans for using that money or for coming up with strategies to cover projected deficits. The sooner you know you have an issue, the easier it is to find a solution that solves the issue. Catch the problem while it is still small and you can do something about it.

5. Helps you improve your business

When you create a detailed budget for your business, it allows you to take a good look at what is happening in your business. As you gather your data for your budget, your contracts, procedures and expenses should be examined as a part of your collection. As you look at each area, make sure what you have is what you want it to be. If not, this IS the time to make changes.

Now is the time to incorporate changes. Any changes you make will be reflected in your budget and more easily tracked because you have them incorporated into your current budget. You don’t have to create a separate process to evaluate the changes. Just be sure to review the changes as you review your financials with your budget each month.

A detailed budget has many business benefits beyond just satisfying your accountant. Use yours to improve your business today!
