5 reasons to spend more time on your budget
You may be tempted to create a quick budget or simply skip creating a budget at all. You may think you are saving time, but you are giving up more than you are saving. Learn more in this week’s blog.
Entrepreneurial business owners like focusing on revenue generating activities rather than spending time on office activities like preparing a budget. But there are a number of reasons that you need to spend enough time to create a well prepared budget for your business. Here are 5 reasons to spend more time on your budget.
1. A hastily prepared budget misleads you
When you don’t take enough time to create a well prepared budget for your business, you are creating a tool that is misleading. Anyone can put some numbers on a spreadsheet and create a budget. But when that budget doesn’t reflect the realities of your business, you could make budget-based decisions that are not good for your business.
You may decide to add a recurring expense that you don’t really have the revenue to cover. You could decide not to pursue a revenue opportunity that could boost your profitability. In both cases, your hastily prepared budget gave you a misleading perception of your business.
2. A well prepared budget guides you
When you take the time to create a well prepared budget, you create a guide for your business. You know when your expenses are off or increasing by comparing actual performance to budget. You know when annual expenses will need to be paid. You know when your projected cash will be low in time to do something about it.
3. A well prepared budget helps you see if you are off plan
It can be tricky determining if your expenses are in the correct proportion to your revenue, especially if your revenue varies from month to month. If your revenue is steady, your expenses can move up slowly, giving you a false sense of consistency. Your well prepared budget allows you to monitor these issues. Your budget will give you a comparison tool that will show you when your numbers are off. Then you can take corrective action sooner to rectify the issue.
4. A well prepared budget saves you time and money
It may seem strange that taking time to create your well prepared budget will actually save you time and money. The time you take to prepare your budget will help you know more about your business. You will be able to spot potential issues ahead of time so you can do something about them. You can take steps to correct projected cash deficits without having to borrow money and pay interest and fees. This will save you time and money that you don’t have to spend with lenders preparing loan documents and responding to information requests once they have loaned you money.
5. A well prepared budget helps you improve your business
The process of creating a well prepared budget makes you examine your business. The examination will reveal inefficiencies and opportunities to improve your business. The process helps you question what you are doing with vendors and procedures. This analysis will help you make changes in your business. You could get better pricing on materials or lock in a lower price on a service contract. The end result is that your customer service and profitability will improve as you examine your business and make changes.
Take the time to create a well prepared budget for your business. The benefits you get when you do are worth the time.
