5 ways a budget helps your vision for your business

A budget not only gives you an annual plan for your business, it also helps your vision for your business. Learn more in this week’s blog.

Preparing your annual budget is essential to establishing your financial plan for the year. But when you prepare your budget, you can get more than just a financial plan. Here are 5 ways that preparing your budget helps your vision for your business.

1. Makes you think about the whole year

When you prepare your budget, you are looking at the whole year. As you examine your finances you have a great opportunity to verify that what you are doing is in line with your existing vision for your company and reflect upon whether that is still the direction you want to go.

Don’t over complicate this. Your vision could be as simple as running a business that pays you well and provides great service to your customers. But even that simple vision requires that you do a good job managing your finances and delivering great services and products.

As you prepare your budget, keeping your vision in mind will help you with both your budget and your vision.

2. Clarifies your spending patterns

As you prepare your budget, you will have an opportunity to examine your spending patterns. As you examine them, keep your vision in mind. Do your spending patterns reflect the vision you have for your business?  If your vision includes being profitable, do your spending patterns maximize your vision? Or do you need to make adjustments to your vendors or how you are making your purchases?

For most items, comparing them month to month is not sufficient for seeing a spending pattern, but looking at your spending over a year typically is a sufficient amount of time to see the trend.

3. Helps you see what needs to be done

Preparing your budget can reveal deficiencies in the things your procedures. These deficiencies need to be corrected to keep your vision on track.

Your budget can also help you determine the best time to make a change. You don’t want to have extra projects to work on during your busiest time of year unless it is absolutely critical to delivering great service or products.

Don’t miss the opportunity to work on improving your business. Making improvements as you see the need is an ideal time to make those changes.  This way, nothing gets missed or set on a shelf and forgotten about.  Often times you will discover that making changes as needed proves to be budget-friendly.

4. Gives you a goal for profitability

Part of your vision needs to reflect what level of profitability you want to achieve.  If you don’t set a good goal for yourself you will consistently under achieve your potential. Preparing your budget gives you the opportunity to set a goal that challenges you and prepares you to achieve it. You need a good plan before you begin. You can’t make changes to your profitability after you are already done with the year.

5. Helps you see where you have been so you can make changes going forward

Preparing your budget is a great time for reflection.  What are you doing to determine if the procedures you are using are the best that they can be? You may have always used a procedure, but that doesn’t mean the procedure is still the best way to accomplish your goal.

Technological changes affect so many things that we do. Telephones used to be attached to the wall and require a long cord to gain a small increase in mobility. Now people carry their phones in their pockets and they are computers at the same time. What “phone cord” is still holding your business back?

Make sure that you prepare your annual budget for your business. When you do, keep these tips in mind so that you help your vision at the same time.
